Regarding the Belgrade Philharmonic’s ongoing strike, Chief Conductor Gabriel Feltz shared a letter of support:
“Ladies and gentlemen, our devoted audience,
My name is Gabriel Feltz, and I have had the privilege of serving as the Chief Conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra since 2017. This is an exceptional ensemble — the fourth orchestra in my career where I have had the honor and responsibility of serving as chief conductor. Every musician of this orchestra is very dedicated and works with incredible passion.
There is no doubt that the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra is the finest and the leading orchestra in the Balkans and beyond, performing at an internationally acclaimed level. Some of the world’s most renowned conductors and soloists regularly collaborate with our orchestra. Over the years, we have accomplished many remarkable projects together, and the orchestra’s quality continues to grow. Conducting this ensemble is always a great privilege for me.
For many years, we have been fighting for fair wages, and unfortunately, we have now been left with no choice but to go on strike. The current salaries at the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra are unacceptably low, and this must change.
To ensure the orchestra’s long-term stability and continued growth, we also need strong leadership — a director with a clear vision for the orchestra’s recovery and further development. That is why, in addition to fair wages, our second key demand is the immediate launch of a transparent selection process for the Belgrade Philharmonic’s new director.
I stand wholeheartedly with our orchestra and fully support our musicians. I urge all of you to do the same and stand with them as well.
With respect,
Gabriel Feltz”
