The most famous Japanese composer outside the borders of his country is certainly Tōru Takemitsu, an almost self-taught composer who researched instrumental and orchestral timbre in his works. On this occasion, we are listening to the Serbian premieres of his works How Slow the Wind and Toward the Sea, which feature members of our orchestra Andrijana Aćimović (alto flute) and Milana Zarić (harp) as soloists. Violinist Tijana Milošević performs as soloist in Spring in Japan 2011 by Aleksandar Sedlar, commissioned by Nemanja Radulović and the ensemble Devil’s Trills, who premiered and recorded it for the Decca publishing house. The composition portrays the great earthquake and tsunami that occurred in March of 2011 and brings an atmospheric range of sounds from popular music to suggesting the agony of this tragic event. Debussy’s symphonic poem La mer has a clear inspiration in Japan, which the author unequivocally confirmed by choosing a photograph of a woodcut by the Japanese visual artist Hokusai for the title page of his score.
