The Swedish mezzo-soprano Karin Lovelius has become well known in Scandinavia and in mainland Europe for her intense interpretations of the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Oper Leipzig, Semperoper Dresden, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Malmö Opera, the Royal Opera House, Sweden, the Odense Concert Hall, the Finnish National Opera, the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Theater Chemnitz and the Gothenburg Opera.

Upcoming engagements include cover for Jezibaba at Glyndebourne Opera Festival in 2019 and Erda in Siegfried and Das Rheingold at Oper Leipzig in 2020.

Ms. Lovelius is currently the leading dramatic mezzo-soprano at Oper Leipzig where her roles include Fricka (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Die Amme (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Waltraute and first Norn (Goetterdammerung), Gertrud (Hansel und Gretel), Adelaide (Arabella), Leokadja Begbick (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Magagonnny), Baba the Turk (The Rake’s Progress), Klytaemnestra (Elektra), Judit (Blueberad’s Castle), Jezibaba (Rusalka), Mary (Der Fliegende Hollaender) and Herodias (Salome).

Outside Leipzig, Ms. Lovelius’ engagements include The Duchess (Powder her Face) at the Musica Nova Festival in Helsinki, Marthe (Faust) and Marcellina (Le Nozze di Fagaro) at Il Teatro Comunale di Bolzano, Schwertleite and Fricka (Der Ring des Nibelungen) at Theater Chemnitz, Lucia (La gazza ladra) at Läckö Slottsopera and Frugola  (Il Tabarro) at Opera på Skäret. Karin has also sung Mother (The Consul) at Folkoperan, Stockholm. On the concert platform Ms. Lovelius has worked with orchestras such as The Gewandhaus Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra and has recorded art song for broadcasting companies such as The Swedish Radio and Bayerische Rundfunk with whom she premiered works by Gerd Kühr and Reine Jönsson. In 2020 she will sing the premiere of Andrew Ford’s piece Nature at Riddarhuset, Stockholm and at Is Arti festival in Lithuania. Karin Lovelius received her training at the Sibelius Academy where she graduated with a master in opera in 2001. She has been awarded several grants from The Swedish arts council and won second prize in Center for Contemporary Opera’s yearly competition.
